What happens in counseling?
All counseling sessions are different. Your counselor will be highly trained in listening providing a safe environment in which to explore your issues. You can discuss anything from everyday events, challenges, feelings, thoughts, dreams, or regrets.

– anxiety
– work issues
– relationship issues

Who are your therapists?
Therapists at Summerlane Counseling are licensed, trained, experienced, and accredited licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFT), licensed clinical social workers (LCSW / LICSW), and/or licensed professional counselors (LPC).

All of our providers have a Masters Degree and/or a Doctorate Degree in their field. They have been qualified and certified by Alabama professional board after successfully completing the necessary education, exams, training and practice.

While their experience, expertise, and background vary, they all possess at least 3 years and at least 3,000 hours of hands-on experience.

Which counselor is right for me?

You can learn about each counselor and their approach by reading the individual profiles here. You can also talk to our admin team who can provide you with further guidance.

We want you to work with a counselor you feel you can trust. If you don’t feel the therapist is a good match after a few sessions, we are happy to help you switch to a different therapist.

How many counseling sessions will I need?
The number of sessions you will need will depend on your unique circumstances. Please ask your therapist so you can decide on the best approach for your needs.
Is counseling confidential?
Yes, counseling sessions are confidential. The exception would be if you were to pose a danger to yourself or others, in which case the relevant parties would be notified.
How does virtual counseling work?
Telehealth/virtual therapy is a wonderful alternative to in-person counseling. From the comfort of your own home, you can have a video session with your therapist where you see each other and talk with each other in a virtual face-to-face setting (similar to Skype or Zoom).

Telehealth saves travel time for individuals with busy schedules or those unable to travel to our office. Many patients use their lunch break and a quiet space such as an office or vehicle to have sessions, without having to take additional time from your day.

To talk with your therapist via video, you will need to schedule an appointment with your therapist and then log in to the telehealth link that is sent to you. You and your therapist will then begin talking on video.
